OK say you have the fraction 3/12.

First find the lowest common factor of 3 and 12 (or whatever your num. and den. is). In this case its 3.

Second, divide by this factor for both the numerator and the denominator. 3/3 = 1 and 12/3 =4.

So the new fraction is 1/4

I'm not sure of two steps, but I think the denominator should be as low as possible and still be a whole number. Like 1-2-3-4-5. If the numerator can be divided by the same number as the denominator, or by 2 or 3, keep doing it until you come up with the lowest whole number, possible. I hope that helps you.
