Biochemists study chemical processes that are unique to living organisms. Basically, biochemists study biochemistry, whether it be in private or practical research, and so I give you a link to biochemistry and not to biochemist:

There are literally thousands of chemical processes that are unique, so it's kind of hard to be specific, but, they all are based of a foundation of organic chemistry in bio-organic environments (living tissue - aqueous environments).

Most of the reactions are catalyzed by protein molecules called Enzymes, and a biochemist may spent a lot of time determining the structure/function role of the enzyme and how it actually functions to promote the reaction (so that perhaps the reaction can be created outside the biological system).

Depends. Some teach classes, others do research on various topics that are not well understood. Some develop drugs, others might study things like insulin in flies to understand how this system works better in humans. It's a really good career path at this time. I plan to do research and teach at a university.

Biochemistry is a study of how the chemistry of cells interact. You may have learned in biology about cell structure and how nutrition and energy is transported into thbody. Biochemistry gets into the specifics of what makes it happens.

Importantly, many of today's drug development is based on biochemistry knowledge. Anti cancer drugs, etc. are based on biochemistry. There is a significant amount of job opportunities in this field.

Besides research on life science?
They do research on medicine.
They run laboratories for hospitals.
They study the environment for pollution.
And much more.
