I would think it's because of ethnic or country background - but doest not seem so because I know of other people from same country but surname does not have same ending bowels/consonants..

The Slavic language or similar languages of the eurasian names means Feminine(for example, ova, ya, a, etc).
and Masculine names end in a consonant (for example, ich, etc)

All male names(first and last) should end in consonants. (ex. Goran Ivanicevich, Lukas Dlouhy, Andrei Pavel, Pavel Vizner, etc) Female names end in a, or ya. (ex. Helena Sukova, Ksenia Lykina ,Svetlana Kuznetsova, Jarmila Gajdosova, etc

Most of them are Eastern European as opposed to a particular country.

The names are based on Russian - "ovich" meaning "son of "and "oyva" meaning "daughter of".
