It is better than nothing. But Zone Alarm is better and you can get a free download of it at: http://www.download.com/3000-2092-10039884.html

The Windows firewall does an OK job of protecting your computer from outside traffic trying to come into your computer. It does nothing to monitor or prevent inside traffic from going out to the Internet. So if your computer were to somehow be infected with a virus, spyware, bulk e-mail program, etc., which send stuff from your PC out, the Windows Firewall will not prevent it from send out the information or e-mails.

For most people who are only using the computer for run at home, the Windows Firewall is usually OK. But when there are free firewalls like Zone Alarm, which use one that only half protects your PC?

Honestly, it is not a good firewall at all. It only tries to filter what comes into your system, not what goes out. It's better to get another firewall. Zone Alarm is fine for the casual home user.

Depends on what you're doing at home. It blocks trojans, worms, and virii from trying to connect, or enter your computer, and it asks if you want to block certain programs from running. But as far as you being on the internet 24/7 (not dialup) and having information you don't want, downloading music, etc.. then I'd get a backup firewall just incase. It's just a simple Firewall pre-installed with Windows so they can say, "we thought about security."

I enjoy Sygate Personal Firewall Pro, like I've always said. Easy to manage, detects a lot of things, logs everything, etc..

It's surprisingly good (for Microsoft) at defending your machine from the outside, but does nothing at all for whatever may be going out. Try Zone Alarm. It's free and very effective.
