I know a girl that I went to college with. She managed to accumulate all of about 50 credits in 6 years. Her problem was that she just couldn't wake up in time to go to class. She went to about 10 doctors and one finally told her she had "schizo-effective disorder." Its not even a recognized condition, its just a label. She dropped out of college. She moved out of state. Somehow, she is getting money from the government every month to the tune of $1400, to compensate for the fact that she has this disorder. She tithes away $140 to church, and spends the rest on clothes. She currently has three credit cards with outstanding balances to the tune of $5000. She pays $20 a month on them. She has no job, not even at a fast food place.

Do you think its fair that the government is paying for this? Don't you think that this money woud be better suited elsewhere? Why should she live this way when people with real problems don't get funding? What can be done? She doens't deserve a free ride

i am NOT asking if she should take it, i'm asking if it should be OFFERED. If someone with nothing wrong with them can claim a cash to the tune of $1400 a month, how many other people are there who are skating by for free while the rest of the population works hard?
Wouldn't this money be better put to use in the form of scholarships or to clean up ghettos and inner city areas? wouldn't it be better off helping the helpless, than helping the lazy?

and to charlie, sorry if i struck a nerve, perhaps you are milking the system too?
i am just curious about other peoples opinions of this situation. I'm sure there are many more just like it, maybe even your own case.

No it is not fair that you, who work hard and pay for everything yourself, get over 20% of your income confiscated by the government to pay for free loaders like her. I understand that people legitimately have illnesses that prevent them from working, but what did people do 100 years ago when there was no government assistance? They found a way to work and put food on the table or they died from starvation. The fact that she manages to shop on a daily basis indicates to me that she's not that sick, which is why this makes you want to puke:).

There are lots of people in this country (in the minority, thankfully) who think that these types of people are incapable of taking care of themselves and therefore need the government to do it for them. But doesn't that 'compassion' actually require you to believe that people are stupid, or ignorant? Do you really believe that a girl, who got into college, is stupid? Or really more that she is just irresponsible and lazy or not taking her medication to control her illness? Do not be deceived by the 'compassion' that some people think they are showing by enabling someone with a handout!

The bigger injustice of welfare, in my humble opinion, is not only that you have to pay for people who don't WORK, but that welfare robs those people of their dignity. They will never know the freedom and pride that comes from providing for themselves. It should be this girl's family that is taking care of her, not the government. They will demand more of her personally to improve herself than the government ever will. That's why welfare and social security benefits never improve peoples lives. To provide for yourself gives you a sense of satisfaction that can never be taken away from you and contributes greatly to your personal happiness, which is what our Declaration of Independance promises us the pursuit of.

People on welfare wait in line for everything they own. If you think that is a great life, then our government has already deceived you by subsidizing your own laziness. Those who work hard (sometimes even two or three jobs), sacrifice their time, energy and lifestyle to go to school, and pay for things themselves always have a better life in the long run. What does our government do to incentivize this behavior? It taxes rich people more! The more money you make (because you earned it by working hard and personally sacrificing a lot of things), the higher percentage that the government takes! So they pay the poor people for doing nothing, and they tax the hardest workers even more for working hard and succeeding at it. It's sick, and it should be pretty easy to identify who in our government supports this twisted system, and those who fight against it.

What amazes me is that she tithes...because the Bible doesn't teach you to sit around on your butt all day and not work, nor does it teach you to spend money that you don't have. I would encourage you to vote if you do not already, and vote for the political party that discourages a government handout to solve any 'problems'. America is the greatest nation in the world, because we founded ourselves on Christian principles and worked for everything we have. Our citizens enjoy more freedom than any others in the world, including the opportunity to work in the job or career of our choice. It is not the goverment's responsibility to give it to us, it is their responsibility to clear the path so that we can achieve as much as we want. The more the government takes from us, the less freedom we have. Don't be decieved by the notion that the goverment can do anything better than you can! You can't change her, but you can vote for politicians that encourage personal responsibility.

You are right the government is not paying her you are! The funny thing about economics that is not taught is that any and all displacement of finances ie. money exchanging hands ultimately has to be accounted for by means of a product or a service. That means that every time someone stands around talking about the weather instead of producing something and being payed to do so, someone somewhere is having to produce that much more while getting payed that much less to compensate or someone is volenteering there time to produce said product and or service. What you are describing is a form of taxation without represntation. In my oppinion they find places to spend it simply in order to keep recieving it. Historically any person or community that has recieved finances simply for reasons of repression lose more self worth, self respect, pride, and a sense of purpose. This does not include those that genuinly need assistance.
The economist Ron Ball has several audio tapes that discuss more topics much simular to this.

I put on a frame protector at all times, I use it for typical driving, hacking and leaping. It is an airowear make and it price round £2 hundred. I might endorse it on account that it offers you quite well security, it protects your again, ribs and collar bones. It is secure and I have had a few tough falls but it surely has stopped my again getting harm, while my historic frame protector didnt provide as so much security. Hope this is helping :)

She apparently does have a recognized disorder. It is not as easy as many people think to get disability payments. Those who apply are screened through doctors and specialists in the field. You seem to know a lot about this girl. Is there a connection that you are not speaking to?

Unfortunately it is not the governments place to tell you how to spend the money or how to live your life. You need to take your own inventory and quit taking hers.

Social Security is very thorough when evaluating people who apply for benefits and they make it really hard to get the benefits, so I am sure that the girl has some genuine problem that allowed her to qualify for benefits.

I'm sorry to hear that this really bothers you but some people might think that you should mind your own business and that your time would be better used on your own personal issues which seem to be significant.

It doesn't sound fair to me, but it happens more often than it should. She, like so many others, is working the system fully to her advantage. The government could investigate more fully to determine if there is fraud involved (duh), but that would require already overworked people to add another task to their to do list. Until voters demand that elected officials fix the system it won't change. Oh wait, that would require bi-partisan efforts by the legislature. Can't have that - everyone is too busy pointing fingers.

Sure she deserves it. If the system is such that they will pay for her "disability" why shouldn't she take it?

I'll bet if your government offered you $1,400.00 a month for nothing, your moral dilemma would pass very quickly.
