The egg. It was hatched from two different species who mated, creating the chicken

A chicken, by definition, is a bird hatched from a chicken egg.
A chicken egg, by definition, is an egg laid by a chicken.

I prefer the simpler answer. God decided that He'd make a chicken one day. The chicken was a kind of bird, and God had already decided that birds would lay eggs. Why mess with a good plan, right?

So God made a chicken, and then it laid an egg. Simple. Why waste time trying to figure out a puzzle that makes no difference anyway? I eat chickens and eggs.

This question was answered a few days ago on here and it appears it was the egg.
The egg was laid by a bird that wasn't a chicken but the last step in evolution to become a chicken.

The egg, because it was laid by a lizard. Eventually, something a little more chicken-y hatched from one of those eggs and went on to lay eggs of its own. Ultimately, a gallus gallus hatched from an egg that was laid by something just a tiny bit more primordial than a modern chicken.

Has to be the egg, you need a chicken and a cockerel to make a fertilised egg.

Easy! The egg - laid by dinsosaurs looooong before chickens evolved. Or further back, ro is fish gamete containing stuff.

((Soft ro or hard ro - one is actually fish ovary, the other is actually fish testicles - can never remember which is which though.))
