Why is a sad romance a comfort? That's a mystery for me.

I'd recommend Jane Austin, Louisa May Alcott, L M Montgomery, Nathaniel Hawthorne. I love the old classics, myself.

Many of these stories are available in both books and movies, so you can get two different slants on the stories. The ultimate in this regard would probably be Gone With the Wind. Great book, great movie, and enough difference between the two to make both worthwhile.

More recently, Jane Austin's Pride and Prejudice and also Sense and Sensibility have been made into beautiful movies which are available on DVD.

P.S. For teens, books written for younger and books written for older are both appropriate. It's that delightful period of your life when you can cross all barriers and find what suits you personally.

Try just about any book by Lurlene McDaniel. Here are some of my favorites:
-Telling Christina Goodbye
-I'll Be Seeing You
-The Angels Trilogy (three books...all really good)

Hope this helps.
Oh, and one other book, by a different author, "Dana's Valley" (by Janette Oke). One of my all-time favorite books.
