Just some of my thoughts...
Try to elaborate them as eloquently as possible without seeming arrogant.
- you realise that you have done something wrong
- list the reasons why it's wrong (unfair to others, what you learn is important for your future etc.)
- everyone should be given a second chance
- you studied very hard in case you are given a chance, which should be rewarded (do study for it, though)
- writing this letter proves that you have taken the time to think about it and proves that you really understand what you have done wrong.
- another chance would greatly motivate you as it would make you believe that your teachers understand you and want you to do well
- if you do well in your second chance of taking the exam (and you promise that you will) it will teach you that you will not only get more out of it when you really study, but that you also will end up with a better mark
just read your additional details:
You have much more grounds to argue for helping a friend... give your teacher a lesson in ethics (look up some philosohers) and you can seriously impress him/her.

Cheating is a pretty bad thing, you should go up to your teacher and explain that you realize what you did was wrong. Why did you cheat, did you not understand a lesson? If you didn't, explain that you really need help in that lesson, also tell the teacher that you understand that cheating won't help in the future, because you'll just forget it, because you didn't study.
Help any? (I think the direct approach helps best)

I would say the following:
I apologize for cheating and disrespecting my fellow students who work so hard to do there work on there own. I have no excuse for what I have done. Even though I probably don't deserve it, I respectfully request that I be given the chance to make up for my mistakes.
Something to that effect. I know you probably don't like it. But school authority figures like crap like that. I should know, I use to be a trouble maker.

You wrote: "...so i was caught cheating by my teacher ..."
First thing you'll want to do is to take accountability for your actions. The issue isn't that you got CAUGHT, the issue is that you were CHEATING.
I'd start this question thus: 'so i was cheating...'
Explain that you understand cheating is wrong, and that you will apply yourself and you apologize for breaking the rules.

Whatever you do, don't lie to them. Just be honest. Tell them that what you did was wrong and that you are sorry. Plead with them for a chance to redeem yourself. Thank them for showing you how unethical it is to cheat.
If you speak from the heart (and don't try to be slick) I think you might be able to convince them to give you another chance.

Just tell them that you're only human and humans make mistakes. Say "you can suspend me if you can honestly say that you have never made a mistake before."

Just don't cheat again. & chalk it up as a learning experience. Other than that, I don't know what to tell you.
Sorry.

because if you get suspended you won't have your books to study and you'll end up cheating on your next test too
