I don't go to craft fairs to buy, I am a vendor. Most people I talk to go to these fairs looking for something different. With that in mind, I try to make unusual things that people might like. Such as hand drawn, matted and framed wildlife pictures, wire wrapped jewelry and now, starting tomorrow, hand printed, hand bound children's books that I've written and illustrated. People like unusual items. Unfortunately, many of the crafts you see at these fairs are done over and over again....crocheted dish towels, crocheted tissue boxes, hand made candles (that never seem to burn for very long)..

I generally look for something that is reasonably priced, to start with. (Cost of supplies x3 is a good guideline.) While I am willing to pay you for your time and effort in making whatever it is, I don't want to pay extra for something just because YOU made it -- since I don't know you. That only works for your mother and her friends. Evaluate your items correctly; don't think to highly or too lowly of them just because you made them. Think of what you'd be willing to pay for this thing if someone else had made it. Then you'll be able to put a good price on them.

I also want something I can't buy anywhere else. After all, if I can buy it somewhere else, there's no good reason I should buy it from you instead of someone else. Always be kind and friendly (beyond simply polite) to those who come into your selling area. I've left booths without buying a thing -- even though I liked it and would have bought -- because the sellers warmly greeted other shoppers and not me. I get enough of that treatment elsewhere; I don't need it when shopping.

I like to look for country/primitive crafts which you hardly see on Maui because almost everyone makes crafts that appeal to tourists who want crafts with an island favor.

I don't get to go out to craft fairs to look. I go to them to sell.

here is a link to a web page that I am trying to start for my business.

There are just some of the stuff that I make from scratch-all homemade items.

I like looking for items that are unique and can be personalized. Once I bought a handmade birdhouse made out of tree branches and they were able to personalize it with a welcome sign, etc that I bought as gifts for the grandparents. I don't mind buying items I can find in retail, as long as I can get them cheaper (for example, smocked gowns, embroidery, etc.)
Holiday items are also a good thing, because they too can be personalized to decorate your home, or to give as gifts.

Honestly, I almost never buy craft items. I love to make things myself, so if I go, it is usually to get new ideas.

I look for things I can't do on my own, like hand-painted clothing.
I'd never buy anything that I could make myself.
