Selflessness would be firstly to be self sufficient and secondly to serve others without expecting anything in return. Not even recognition and acknowledgement of the help.

Not exactly a brain teaser.
Already the brain is 'nagged' by a back-seat-driver called 'mind' ! And so, the concept is a bit difficult for an enslaved brain to really grasp.
When we do something out of the need of the situation, and we merge with the situation, we are no more a priority, to look back for what we lost or what we got. There is no 'residue' in us, good or bad etc about what we did(or chose to abstain), since the situation needed us to do, and our ego 'failed' to interfere/interrupt before we acted ! We feel at the most , some deep inner joy (which may not even seek a manifestation !). Shall we say in such situations we are 'self'-less ?

The answers you have are good. Selflessness was best modeled by Jesus. We Christians want to be like Him, so we are called to be as selfless as we can in showing God's love to others.

True selflessness comes only when one is deeply rooted in the Self. One then realizes that the living person is just a tool for service.

Selflessness sounds good in plattitute, but makes for poor attitude.
One does not make a sacrifice by giving away the useless, the worn out, the ignored, the "junk" of one's life. A sacrifice is made of the best, the newest, the wanted, the necessary of one's life.
Thus, in order to be selfless, one must give of the self, yes, but the best of the self that can be offered. It is, therefore, imperative that one retain ambition, drive, high motive, self-respect, love for self, a never-ceasing quest for self-growth, self-discovery and self-improvement.
Only by taking care of the self can one be worthy to give to others.
Later Edit: Upon reflection, and with a nod to the Christians on this board, perhaps I should add Jesus to my sources. He said it just as well: "Love thy neighbor as thyself." AS, not more than.
Blessed be.

Giving-up-ones-wealth.
Of course,we know that no-one is completely "selfless".
For,how would we know that they did(the above)?
But dont let this worry you,too much.
For the great scholar below also clearly showed that
so-called"concepts"are a load of balony too.

Selflessness is when you very very honestly keep your selfish motives aside and do something for any other soul on this earth without a thought...............
And only 2 people really know your motives in life-- you yourself and GOD.........you need to ask yourself---- "am i doing this for any of my direct/indirect interests?" if the answer is NO you have understood selflessness!

Always considerations for OTHERS before self. SELF is non-existence in selflessness.
