I just went to Fry's Electronics (a West Coast electronics warehouse). I was looking for LCD monitors for my PC. I was price conscious and the sales guy told me the monitor I was interested in had real low contrast ratio. I asked him what it meant and he just told me it was better to have higher contrast ratio. I told him I wanted a monitor that was going to "last" and be durable without burning out anytime soon.
He told me that the higher contrast ratio LCD's would last longer. Is this true? Or is he the typical Fry's sales guy who doesn't really know too much. Thanks.

No absolutely not!! contrast ratio has nothing to do with durability of LCD monitors. Contrast ratio is a scale within which the diffrent possible combinations of colors can be made. higher the contrast ratio richer the color display u'll get.

Contrast ratio is the ratio between the bright white, and black.
Because LCDs work by blocking the light coming from the backlight behind the panel they never go totally black. The contrast ratio is a measure of how black the LCD can really get.
Higher contrast ratio is better becasue that means a blacker black.
It has no relationship to the durability and longevity of the monitor at all.
If you want something that will last, then ther is no hard and fast rule. My personal opinion is that I would go for a better manufacturer panel. Samsung, LG, etc. Someone who is willing to put a 3 year warranty on their product would be a reasonable choice too.

I bought a mac which has the computer built in the monitor, the resolution is awesome, and saved alot of space! This does not answer your question about contrast ratio, which I am clueless. But my thinking is that you may avoid all the problems by getting a mac instead; I met someone that had a mac for over 15 years and still using it... everything still works, including the monitor, of course. I had several PC's and none lasted more than 4 years. I took a chance buying a mac last year, and now I wish I started earlier. I'm a mac fan now. Just a suggestion.

A high contrast ratio means a larger contrast of colors and thus a better monitor and if it makes a difference to the durability it is very small.
