According to law, Bipolar Disorder is classified as a medical condition and cannot be treated or cured except by approved drugs. There are, however, various nutrients that can be taken in order to support the body a help to maintain healthy brain functioning.
Let food be thy medicine. - Hippocrates
Besides the oxygen we breathe, all that we need to survive comes from what we eat. Food nourishes both the body and the brain. In fact, the brain has first call on the available supply of nutrients. Therefore, the first effects of nutritional deficiencies are often mental symptoms.
When orthomolecular psychiatrists refer to a nutritional deficiency, they are not necessarily talking about the prevention of a traditional deficiency disease, such as beriberi, a once-common illness that is fortunately now rare due to vitamin B1 food supplementation. However, lesser subclinical deficiencies are quite common. While not enough to bring on overt physical symptoms, they are often sufficient to stimulate changes in brain chemistry, and affect mood. Antidepressants, including St. John's wort, are not likely to be successful in treating these cases until the specific deficiency is corrected.

I don't know about bipolar disorder but I take Tyrosine when I am just starting to feel depression kick in. Typically I only need one to two days and I feel much better.
As for as food stay well away from refined carbs as this will mess with your blood sugar facilitating you mood swings. Make sure you get enough protein. I'm a vegetarian so I need to be extra mindful, but it can be done.
Finally as someone else mention exercise is a big help. I have a friend that had severe depression and in the end the thing that help him the most was to exercise. And you don't have to knock yourself out. I have heard that all you really need to do is break a sweat and that's it.
Try getting a gym membership and or running while the weather is decent. Member don't pound the pavement or your be out of commission. Run slow and keep you heels about an inch off the ground. Do this for 4 days a week just till you break a sweat. I garuntee this will at least help.
Good luck my friend.

There is no cure for bipolar disorder because it is not a disease, you can only cure disease.
As for foods, no, none will effect a cure.
you can help with some of the severity of mood swings by avoiding refined sugars, but other than that, your best bet for treatment is medication.

No, there are no food cures for bipolar. The best thing is even if your feeling depressed is to try and force your self to exercise. Eating a well balanced meal with little meat product in the long term help you to feel better about your self.

food won't cure a person diagnosed with a clinical mental illness like bi-polar, but eating properly as outlined in books like "Potatoes not Prozac" and "The Mood Cure" can eliminate almost all cases of moderate depression/anxiety.

In my own experience St. John's wort eliminates bipolar disorders. I haven't had a bipolar disorder in about 7 years by taking it.
Let me know if it works for you.
