I would say for $3 you can buy a loaf of bread and a pack of butter. Less is you use margarine.

In Chicago...
Crappy generic bread with very little nutrition and lots of preservatives and transfats could cost possibly as little as $1 for a loaf. Good bakery bread can cost $5 per loaf. It will be hard to find a lb. of butter for less than $4. I paid $5 for a lb. of good butter today. I recently paid $2 for a 680 gram loaf of whole wheat (major commercial brand).

It depends on where in the US you will be. Prices will vary. In the New York City area a loaf of bread is about $2 and butter is about $2.50 - $3.50 for a pound. I'm sure it is cheaper in other parts of the country.

I'm buying store brand white bread for $1.99 a loaf. Sometimes with a sale I can get two loaves for $1.99. Butter is going for about $2.00 for a pound of sticks depending on the brand. (Safeway in California)

Seriously, mate, if you only have to buy bread and butter to eat the cost is going to be negligible compared to your travelling costs! If you can afford £500 air fair and £50 per night lodgings, a couple of quid for food is nothing!
