Because of the assumption that most people below the age of 8 lack the maturity to vote. They can not grasp the significance of their vote, nor are they likely to be well informed. Just look at any high school student government election and you can get the idea.

Unfortunately, the truth of the matter is that most people below the age of 25 lack the maturity to handle the right to vote with the amount of respect and thoughtfulness it deserves.

BTW the voting age used to be 21, but it was lowered during the Vietnam era (1971) since countless 18 year olds were being drafter to go off to war. The argument being that if someone was old enough to die for their country they were old enough to vote.

Because the human experience over thousands of years has convinced the populace that those under the age of 18 are generally not competent to vote, and that is more true than ever today as issues become increasingly complex.

There are notable exceptions to this rule, and your elders might agree to allowing younger individuals to vote if they could prove their individual competence by testing. The problems would include administrative cost for the testing, and of course the corruption that might follow as people cheated on the tests, possibly with the aid of those giving the tests. Better just suck it up and wait for your time.

Because in MOST cases under 18 is not responsible enough to make educated decisions. Why do you have to be 16 to drive or 18-21 to drink? Same reason, responsibility.

I personally think that in MOST cases a person should have to be at least 21 to vote or take a test to vote but hey thats just me

That's what the constitution requires. It used to be 21, but the 26th amendment changed it. Basically, the rule is there to restrict the vote to people who (hopefully) have enough intelligence, judgment, and experience to make a reasoned, informed choice. Watch a gaggle of 13 year old kids at a party some time - do you want them deciding who gets the most important job in the world?

In the Constitution -- unfortunately. See, if that little statute weren't in place, I'd have to wait until 2012 for my first Presidential election, but as it stands I turn 18 about three weeks before the 2008 election, so I can't complain too much. Even so, it worries me, because I feel that a lot of people in my age group, quite bluntly, are not intelligent enough to make a good decision on their ballots.

Because not all under 18 year olds a mature enough to vote and the presidents try to get votes buy appealing to voters..
which means some Presidents & MP's might try some realy stupid policys to apeal to 3 - 9 year olds. or a lot of 12 - 16 year olds
might all vote for legalise Cigerettes to 12 year old partys or legalise canibis partys..
or the parent might just fill out their kid forms and get a extra vote for them selfs

Because that is the law, and that is the time you are considered an adult. Children don't vote, though I sometimes think they could make better choices than we seem to have a history of doing!

Because 18 is the current age approved under amendment to the Constitution. It can be amended lower (as has already been done) or higher, if the public so wishes.

Because you have to be an adult to vote. The constitution says so. I know it is frustrating not being able to voice your opinion when you are a teenager, but unfortunatly, that is the law. Don't worry though, you will have your day........and plenty of opportunities to vote!

People in the gubernotorial soceity believe that it is improper for people under age of 18 to vote because they lack truth and experience in decisions.

That means that people under age 18 are not capable of deciding who would be the best leader for the country.

As a person, I disagree with that, but that's what the rules are >__< Darn rules :)
