I own a 1999 Honda Civic EX and I hate popping my hood and looking at a dirty engine. Would cleaning it give me more power and how could I clean it without damaging any parts?

Cleaning it won't give you more HP if your only cleaning the outside. it's the carbon and sludge IN the engine that eats horse power. Be very carefull if you use a pressure washer to clean the outside of your engine, water in a computer or even an electrical connection will keep your engine from starting. I would use some engine degreaser (bio-degradeable), small brushes and just a garden hose. Also, get some brake cleaner, if your engine won't start, spray it on the electrical connections to help suck the water out.

Cleaning it might make you feel better, but won't do a thing for the power.

It's best to let someone who knows what they're doing do the cleaning. There are many electrical parts that could be damaged from the use of water or solvents.

If you insist on doing it yourself, use plastic bags to cover electrical components (relays, alternator, electrical connections, etc.) and get a spray engine degreaser. Take your time and make sure you don't damage anything. It's best to wipe it down by hand.

no its not gonna give u more power. just take it to a local car wash and use the pressure washer in the engine bay. also if u want it really clean buy some engine gunk and spray it over the engine. it comes in an orage can.

--note* always leave the engine running while washing under the hood

--good luck

take it to a car wash and use the engine degrease option they have and spray it off, or go to a parts store buy some Engine degreaser and follow the directions may take a few times. no it wont give you more horse power but you will be able to spot leaks allot easier if you have them, and it could save you a more costly repair bill down the line. nether option is going to ruin your engine as long as you don't go stupid with the sprayer. i do mine at least twice a year my engine looks practacly new and its a 97

No extra HP, but it will possibly run cooler and look better too. It may also help prevent electrical problems in the future. It will be easier to work on, as you won't be worried about getting dirt on all your clothes.

You won't get more power but it may run a little cooler.
