Hi,
I wonder if anyone can help me. I have just purchased an Acer TravelMate 3200 without an operating system. It came with the bootable disk and recovery disks(3). Its necessary I put Windows XP Pro on it.
I've yet to get the Windows XP Pro (as I only have a Compac Operating System CD disk handy with Microsoft Win XP Pro).
1/ Do I need to do anything before putting Windows XP on (ie run the recovery disk/s first)
2/ Could I use the Compac disk that has Micr Win XP Pro on it or is that a complete no no.

Totally new to this - any advice much appreciated

Though I never tried this myself, one of two things should happen:
1) The installation will detect that it's not a Compaq computer and will abort at the beginning or at some point during install
2) The installation will finish, but you'll have drivers to install, assuming XP Pro doesn't crash

As with most recovery disks provided by the computer maker, they're specially tailored for their machines. Once recovery completes, one can resume with their tasks and apply updates as necessary. Since the Acer is new and without an OS, you might as well try the recovery CD and see what happens. Chances are that you're out of luck and will have to obtain a normal copy of XP Pro.

You should definately use the recovery cd's. Recovery cd's means Windows + drivers bundles together in a way the end-user just pops in the cd's and the installation is automated and easy. Compaq disks wont work with the Acer. Also a normal XP pro cd is not recomended for installing windows in the Acer because after installation there will be a hell lot of installing drivers and configuration. That is the long way.

So basically you recovery disks are your windows cd's and they will do the trick...

1. No there is nothing to be done before puttin up XP. Just ensure that the bios settings has all the right options for boot order.

2. There is no restrictions in tryin it out. If, the CD gets recognized by the laptop, and allows you to install the OS, then yes, you can proceed to install the OS frm the available disc.

i'm not sure in case you will get a Dell w/o an OS. yet installation Ubuntu materials the alternative of formatting the tensepersistent and wiping out living house windows XP off if truth be told changing it with Ubuntu Linux. additionally, i do no longer know if it is achieveable or your skill point, yet in simple terms like the thank you to create a private computing device from guy or woman components, i think of they have kits now to do the comparable with laptops. that would finally be extra value-effective than getting a pre-built sort and you could often have extra constructive specs than the pre-built fashions for the value.
