I agree with the poster above, try to copy English accents in film etc. But Mary Poppins is a big no-no; much as I love Dick Van Dyke he is well known for putting on the worst cockney accent in film history.

Also, try to avoid the stereotypes such as extreme cockney (like Dick) and overly posh/hugh grant-esque. Although some English people do speak in this way they are in a minority and it can sound ridiculous in the wrong hands. (e.g Dougray Scott in Desperate Housewives. He should really have known better being Scottish!)

Also, the difference between English and American accents is mostly in the vowel sounds. Get those right and you'll be in business!

There is nothing worse on the stage, than a bad accent -- especially British! Please, do not attempt until you've worked with a dialect coach!

work on that...and watch Marry Poppins and Harry Potter and other brittish movies a million times so it is beaten into your brain how they speak. thats what i do. i need to hear something before i can do it myself
