i just got another geforce 8500 gt video card to install in my pc that i built. i have a pentuim d 3.4 gh dual core, 3 gigs of pc5300 ram, an asus sli motherboard. after i installed the other video card i started getting problems with my pc shutting down or giving me a blue screen of death before restarting. i thought that it might be the new video card so i uninstalled it and tried the one that i had installed originally. same thing happens! the pc just restarts when it goes into windows. i have also tried to reinstall windows but after rebooting into a fresh copy of windows xp it does the same thing. my power supply worked fine before trying to install the second video card so thats why i think i might have burnt it out somehow. the power supply was a 500w that had a bunch if connections. i think i might have gotten a power supply that doesn't support an sli setup. i later looked on the box of the power supply and it didn't say anything about being sli compatible.

i took out all other components like two out of the three ram chips, dvd drive, tv card, and everything else and just left the power supply, one one gig stick a small laptop sata hard drive, and one of the two video cards and it still shuts down in windows and not in the bios. although i think my pc shut itself of within the bios after about 15 to 30 minutes. i've also tried loading the default settings in the bios and windows still wants to restart. i'm thinking it is the power supply, but if it is then why is my computer shutting off after i uninstalled all of the components that i just listed. i just think its weird.

i forgot to add that i also added a new asus cpu cooler. it keeps my processor at about 42 to 49 degrees instead of 50 to 55 so i don't think its an overheating issue. i also have an intake fan in the front of my case and an outtake on the back. it also seems like that my power supply gets kinda hot. hotter than when i first installed it. i think i might install the original power supply and a working pci video card like a geforce 4 mx and see if the system boots up and if it does then i think it is the power supply. i have never had a power supply that has gotten so hot before!

well i just tried another power supply. lol but i did something stupid i tried a 380w power supply and i think the motherboard needs at least a 400w so it was doing the same thing even after installing a working geforce 2 mx video card. what kind of signs should i look for to make sure its just not my motherboard acting up
