Don't use any clay or clumping litters. Clay ones can be dusty which can lead to respiratory problems. Clumping litters can cause a blockage if eaten. Wood shavings don't absorb urine or odor, so aren't an effective litter. Cedar and pine can also cause respiratory problems. Aspen is safe, but more expensive. Wood or paper pellets are the best and safest litters. Wood pellets can be horse stall bedding or wood stove pellets. Both are kiln dried as part of the manufacture process, so are safe. You can usually find them at a farm or feed store. Paper pellets are generally made of recycled newspaper. They are safe to use. Some brands have bags for cats and for small animals, these are the same and it doens't matter which one you buy. Avoid any scented product. You might think it smells nice, but you don't have to be next to it all day every day.
