despite what crap continually comes out of hollywood, there are still plenty of original, innovative things out there that haven't been done yet, unlike the remake remake remake strategy that the motion picture industry is stuck on currently. here are some great stories that would make great movies - however, LEAVE THEM THE WAY THEY ARE!!! i understand editing for time constraint, but completely rewriting it and then releasing it under the same name? no. my list:
- "year zero" by jeff long
- "cryptonomicon" by neal stephenson
- "the case of charles dexter ward" by h.p. lovecraft
- "fairyland" by paul j. mcauley
as well as many others that escape me at the moment, in addition to those that have been made into movies previously, and very badly. h.p. lovecraft and philip k. dick alone have enough material for dozens of movies. any other suggestions?

I think, any book that has one good idea in it, even if it is only one line, or one paragraph in it, even if the rest of the book is crap, it can be the basis for a good film, if provided with a good screen writing approach.
Changing the story for commercial reasons is frustrating (especially when you see catchy additions like non-existent romantic scenes), but changing it in order to accommodate and emphasize one of the ideas that the book included is the job of every film maker that makes an adaptation. The audience shouldn't expect a simple illustration of the book on the big screen. This is futile and always disappointing. They should expect a fresh approach, an argument, a new way of reading the same book.
This film making approach starts a creative dialogue between audience-film, audience-book and film-book.

Sheri Reynolds - A Gracious Plenty.
a woman who was burned as a child still bears the scars. She is the caretaker of a cemetery and speaks with the dead. She has no living friends and creates this harmony with those buried in her cemetery.
The dead interfere with the living. A former beauty queen is buried and becomes friends with the main character. Asks her to tell her living mother she was not murdered, she committed suicide. Tension builds to a surprising climatic end.
I have read this book eight times, and picture it as a film each time.

I would so much want to see Rider Haggard's "She, Ayesha" and "Ayesha, The Return of She". These are such mesmerizing books & from the point of view of movie making are great. I wish this comes to the mind of some movie director & I'm able to see the movies based on these two books.
