I have a Chevy Cobalt 2005, it is an automatic
Recently, I have noticed that sometimes it will shift gears very abuptly, causing the car to leap forward during acceleration.

What could be causing this, could i have prevented it, and would it be covered by a standard powertrain warranty.

Sorry, I do not have too much details to give, but I don't have alot of car knowledge.

I have done all the required maintenance and oil changes, and at the last one I asked the mechanice. and he couldn't give me an answer!!

Thanks for your help!!

It could be a number of different things. I don't know about the Cobalt specifically, but most of the times, when cars do that, they have a faulty o2 sensor. The sensor makes the car "think" that it isn't getting enough airflow while shifting gears, so it compensates by throwing in some more gasoline, causing the RPMs to rise, which leads to that abrupt leap you are talking about.
Again, that is a likely scenario - it could be a number of things, though.

It is time to go tho the dealership. Yes your 50,000 mile warranty should cover it. Some time it's a good idea to get your minor services done at a Chevorlet Dealer. They may have already experenced this condition. The could be a service bulliten for harsh 1-2 shift. Or late Hard 1-2 shift. Good luck.
