a2 = 2
an = a(n-1) + a(n-2)

a3 = a2 + a1 = 2 + 1 = 3
a4 = a3 + a2 = 3 + 2 = 5
a5 = a4 + a3 = 5 + 3 = 8

a6 = a5 + a4 = 8 + 5 = 13
a7 = a6 + a5 = 13 + 8 = 21

The next two terms are 13 and 21!

This is called Fibonacci Sequence, where each term is the sum of the two previous terms.

1 + 1 = 2

2 + 1 = 3

3 + 2 = 5

5 + 3 = 8

8 + 5 = 13

13 + 8 = 21

21 + 13 = 34

You are give the first two numbers: 1 and 2
Then next number is the previous two numbers added together:
1+2 = 3
2+3 = 5
3+5 = 8
5+8 = 13
8+13 = 21

So, the next two digits are 13 and 21.

This is the Fibonacci Sequence published in 1202 AD by Leonardo of Pisa, known as Fibonacci, a contraction of Fils Bonacci (son of Bonacci) in his book Liber Abacus (the book of the abacus).

Leonardo was an Italian mathematician who grew up amongst the traders of North Africa and learned a great deal about Arabic mathematics from them. His book was the means whereby Europe was introduced to Arab mathematics, and the sequence that bears his name was known to Arab mathematicians for several hundred years before him.

He introduces the sequence by way of it being a solution to the problem of the month-by-month total of the numbers of rabbits bred by an idealised rabbit population.

1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233, 377, 610, 987, 1597, 2584 etc

Each term can be generated recursively as the sum of the previous two terms. The numbers, as you can see, get rapidly larger, as might be expected with rabbits!

Hi,

13,21 where after the first 2 terms you add the previous 2 terms to get the next one.

5 + 8 = 13
8 + 13 = 21

each term is sum of its two immediate preceeding terms.
3=2+1
5=3+2
8=5+3
next term=8+5=13
next = 13+8=21

it is 5 + 8 = 13
then 8+ 13 = 21

because each number is the sum of both it previous numbers

hence next term = 13, term after that = 21
