At what stage of evolution did man develop a sense of humour? What caused it? How does it make him a better species? If man evolved from apes, why don't monkeys and gorillas have a sense of humour? And why would baboons evolve to have hair all over the body except the face and behind? And why do baboons have multi-coloured behinds? Does this mean that evolution is kinda funny, or is God funny?

ahh but primates do show a sense of humor. How is humor expressed? Dont think of it as simply telling jokes and laughing. Where does play and inquisitiveness come in>? A three year old does not understand my jokes, but play is how one connects to a toddler. Primates have the ability to engage in similar types of play, Ive seen peekaboo happen often. the evolutionary positive pressure on a behavior that encourages social bonding is evident.

Your question is so broad, and the assumptions are huge. But if you have ever been to the zoo when the chimps are flinging poo, Id ask you again who doesnt have a sense of humor...

good luck!

We have still yet to see any evidence of one species becoming another. Variations in the same species doesn't equate to evolution. For all we know at this stage is that those variations are preprogrammed in the DNA as possible variations. Mixing of DNA may make a new type of dog, but it is still a dog. So, even if a complex single cell organism managed to spontaneously form with perfect parts one time or even a thousand times, it wouldn't account for the wonderful variety of life here on Earth.

Geoffrey Miller has started to tackle this question, from the perspective that humor is an indication of intelligence, and intelligence is an indication of good genes, so it was sexual selection that might have caused humor. You should read his stuff for a more detailed explanation. 'The Mating Mind' is a good read on this.

Does this mean that people that don't have a sense of humor are devolving?

Humor is a societal cultural thing, I have yet to see a genetic correlation, which means it is not likely part of the evolutionary process.
