1. loss of power (engine misfiring, feels like your car is not firing on all cylinders)
2. coolant streaming out of the engine
3. might have overheated before the gasket blew
4. open the cap where you put oil in, and look at the colour. if its a milky brown then you know its blown (oil and water and other junk mixing together)

In addition to the above answers the surest way to determine if you have compression going into the cooling system is to top off the radiator to the filler neck. Bring the engine to operation temp and watch the coolant in the radiator. If you have lots of bubbles or large bubbles coming out the filler you have a bad head gasket or, worst case, a cracked head.

What you describe might just be the result of condensation with it sitting so long. A HG won't blow while the car's laid up for the winter so you should be all right. I'd get the oil changed, pronto. That should fix it, but keep an eye on water consumption and the temperature gauge till you've satisfied yourself that it's not the HG.

Some quick ways to find out is there would be coolant in your oil or in the cylanders. You'll probably get smoke coming from the exhaust with a funny odour.

If its blown you will probably see fuel or oil coming out around the gasket, you will be losing cylinder pressure and if the car stil runs you may see air escaping.
