I find it a strange insult. How many people have New Labour punished for trying to fly the English/Union Jack flags? How can they expect us to feel unified after hastling us for trying to be patriotic. Fckin hypocrisy!

I think its is a good thing which George B has done, it is about time someone in office shows some regard/respect for this country. In Europe, all the individual countries fly their flags over all public buildings all the time, there is no time limit and I don't think there is here.

It remains to be seen whether he becomes a good PM and whether he cares for the people of not, but everyone should give him a chance. OK so he messed up in the House yesterday, but what a first week he has had. Don't forget that El Presidente Blaire messed up all the time for the 10 years he was in power.

Good for GB to take time out and be interviewed on the TV this am - that is a first. He can't "magic" the water away in Hull - but I'm sure he will do all he can to see that those poor people get some assistance.

The Jury is still out on whether he can sort out the shambles of the CSA. But as I said, it is early days, give him a chance.

This was a silly rule and I'm glad that Brown has scrapped it.

I would like to see the Union Flag flown on all government buildings and by more 'ordinary people'.

For too long our national banner has been hijacked by the racists and the bigots, and it is about time that real British people of all colours and religions reclaimed the flag from those who sully it with their racist rhetoric.

The guy can't win with some people can he. first he is accused of being too Scottish (which, last time I looked also meant British) to be PM. Now he flies the Union Jack and is accused of a PR stunt.

by the way - Karen - your paranoid obsession with the EU is getting silly. There is no "EU flag" . The flag you have such a problem with is the European Flag which is owned by the Council of Europe (CoE) — a separate international organisation which does not have an organic link with the European Union — and is intended to represent Europe as a whole as opposed to any particular organisation such as the EU or the CoE.

Because after years of Labour pushing and trumpeting devolution the chickens have come home to roost.

Brown is seen by many in England as a foreign PM, because he's a Scot. After pushing for devolution, there's a worry that the Union might actually split.

In a piece of typical political backpedalling, Brown is now trying to get us to be all happy, cheery British together.

Gordon Brown asks us to fly the flag as a patriotic gesture to help create a new sense of Britishness. Its wonderful to see the Union Flag flying!!Sadly the EU flag will be given the same legal status as the Union Flag once the EU "Treaty" is ratified.

I'm American and had no idea you guys had a rule that limited the flying of the flag . What's the purpose of that ? Sounds like Britain was trying to be too pc . And from all the way across the ocean we can see what being too pc got ya . .....An out of control Radical Islamist population . We do pray for you guys as our brothers and sisters .
I also see that you have your share of 'Brown Haters' , ala our 'Bush Haters' . That one guy seems to be blaming Brown for so much , yet Brown just got into office !! (shakes head)

EDIT* - Wow . I see hatred is not exclusive . Brown does a good thing and hateful people want to ruin it by saying he's only doing it to make himself seem more British . Geeesh people . If ya get something good , why try and turn it into something bad ?!?!

Wales and Scotland want independence, and there is a strong and growing will of these nations to leave the UK and join Europe - so brown is basically saying he is against it and sees it as a threat to the union (so britishness has now got to be rammed down our throats).

Unfortunately Scotland is now the poorest small european country, and wales has something like a third of children living below the poverty line...so after hundreds of years of union, I guess the end result of this - has been pretty rubbish or everyone apart from the english.

Because it does not actually mean anything any more. Tony Blair signed over our our country to Europe, and the New Flag is that of Europe. It does not matter what flag you put up it simply has no meaning and Gordon is taking us all for Jerks.
