what sort of features should i be looking for when shopping a round for a NIC?

use edimax. last for 3-4 years.
u dont need a feature.
just see support 32 bit pci bus
plug n play,
driver support windows, linux or else.

Price. A NIC is a NIC. Look for a decent brand like Intel or Linksys. That's it. Go for price.

I have always had good luck with and found easy support for any with the Realtek chip. They are very common and have support in all OS's. Should be able to get one for aroud $15$20 at any major retailer that has computer equipment.
