Well, perhaps the most dramatic way is to be driving down the road, hear a loud bang followed by smoke and the engine quitting, then when you raise the hood you see oil all over the engine and a large hole in the block. (Think back to the scene where the engine blew in the former cop car in "Blues Brothers")

For the less dramatic ones, it's a matter of speculation unless your mechanic checks and tells you it's terminal. Were there strange noises, a ticking that got louder? Do you have a oil light lit all the time? Sudden loss of power where it doesn't want to pull its own weight?

If you're engine is siezed or messed up in some other way, firstly check the oil. It sounds elementary, but if there's no oil in your oil pan, then you could have run it out, and that'll do it. Other than that, try to start it: What will happen is you'll hear the starter engage the flywheel, the fuel pump pumping, essentially the electric stuff coming on. If the engine doesn't even start to turn, that could be it. I'm not a mechanic, but those should be some of the basic red flags. Have your vehicle checked out by a shop.
