I can’t recall Unix working on IBM 360/370 but it was used on compatible Amdahl systems.

I don't know why those people told you to get a IBM 360 or 370 run Unix. You can run Solaris on the PC.

Why do you need a mainframe?

You would probably get more CPU power out of higher end PC, nevermind an AIX or workstation. Most things can run some sort of UNIX.

I thought at most mainrames were rented. So if you want to get hold of one you would need to contact IBM, but I suspect that they scrap the old stuff.

I wouldn't think you've got a snowball in hells chance of finding one and even if you did you'd spend more time maintaining it than using it. Try looking for a used Sun Workstation (SPARCstation) you might have a little more success.
