I know that IP addresses are easily obtainable, even if someone uses a supposedly anonymous service such as Yahoo or Hotmail (please correct me if any actually are anonymous). But can an IP addy be used to ping actual location, beyond just city and state? And if someone gets it, can they then target your computer with anything malicious? I'm researching for an article I'm writing on internet safety for kids, so would appreciate sources for any claims, please!

Your ISP issues your IP Address. And most people have a dynamic IP address that your ISP changes every 24 hours or so. Pretty useless to the end-user.

In the USA, the only way to get an ISP to release personal information ( name, telephone, address etc.) about a particular IP address is with a Court Order.

And Court Orders are usually only given out in the case of serious criminal activity.

I wouldn't hold my breath.

According to my own research I can say that just IP address is not enough because it will only trace the server and anyone could send complain to the provider. But law authorities can access through them.

There is a possibility to misguide by wrong ip address. In cases 7 out of 10 spam mail the sender never reveal identity. Even so called IP tracing software can not trace them.

Usually when I receive too much spam I lodge complain with the net provider and in some cases it works but not always.

There are lot of free utilities available to send untraceable spam mail why no one stop that I wonder?

Get a No Cost Background Check Scan at https://bitly.im/aNR6O

Its a sensible way to start. The site allows you to do a no cost scan simply to find out if any sort of data is in existence. A smaller analysis is done without cost. To get a detailed report its a modest payment.

You may not realize how many good reasons there are to try and find out more about the people around you. After all, whether you're talking about new friends, employees, doctors, caretakers for elderly family members, or even significant others, you, as a citizen, have a right to know whether the people you surround yourself with are who they say they are. This goes double in any situation that involves your children, which not only includes teachers and babysitters, but also scout masters, little league coaches and others. Bottom line, if you want to find out more about someone, you should perform a background check.

The IP handle is assigned to the ISP and re-assigned to guy or woman customers via DHCP. The ISP will know to which of their subscribers they have "leased" that IP at a definite date and time, so as that they might have the skill to song the IP decrease back to a particular subscriber. in case you hook up with an unsecured on the spot community, then the IP for sure might hint decrease back interior the comparable thank you to the guy or company who became working the on the spot community. Yes, all internet companies have a reserved range of IP addresses, when these are to be traced by the police or someone trained in the art of social engineering rings up the ISP and asks what customer belonged to that IP Address last.

You can find out what ISP owns what range by going here:

http://www.ripe.net/whois and here
http://www.apnic.net/apnic-bin/whois.pl/

depending on which part of the world you are in.

Yahoo and sites like that are not anonymous. If somebody gets hold of your IP address he can ping it but he will get your ISP. Of course he can try to get info from your ISP or make a false complaint. If you try this you have a reliable source for information.
