In June 1961, the ANC executive considered his proposal on the use of violent tactics and agreed that those members who wished to involve themselves in Mandela's campaign would not be stopped from doing so by the ANC. This led to the formation of Umkhonto we Sizwe. Mandela was arrested in 1962 and sentenced to five years' imprisonment with hard labour. In 1963, when many fellow leaders of the ANC and the Umkhonto we Sizwe were arrested, Mandela was brought to stand trial with them for plotting to overthrow the government by violence. His statement from the dock received considerable international publicity. On June 12, 1964, eight of the accused, including Mandela, were sentenced to life imprisonment. From 1964 to 1982, he was incarcerated at Robben Island Prison, off Cape Town; thereafter, he was at Pollsmoor Prison, nearby on the mainland

Richmond girl has it 100% ccorrect - Nelson Mandela was jailed for treason. Weatherman - do you even know where South Africa is? Do you even know what racism is? I didn't think so... I am South African and I can tell you now, racism is only alive in history classes.
What happened with Mandela was wrong, but it was put right. F.W. De Klerk new he would not win the next presidential election with Mandela running against him (contrary to popular belief - politicians are not stupid) and he still went ahead and did it.
Besides, apartheid was a time that wasn't even around when I was born. Why are people (and these are people that have never even been in SA) still going on about it. It is over and done with. The people who caused it an the people who were affected by it are long gone (May their souls rest in peace). It was a horrible time, but it is over now!

Nelson Mandela was a leading member of the ANC [African National Congress] supported by the British Labour Movement and others, including the Liberal Party of UK and SA.
Nelson Mandela was imprisoned because the SA apartheid government and the Boers in particular, wanted to stop the activities, political, of the ANC.
Nelson Mandela was a freedom fighter for 'liberty, freedom and democracy'. He remains in the hearts and minds of the people a hero in much the same way as Geo. Washington and any other 'patriot'.
Nelson Mandel is held in the very highest esteem here in UK.
Why, the BBC even rebuilt his garden for him in SA. It is they, the BBC and the political movements of UK, including Margaret Thatcher, who kept up the heat while Nelson Mandela was in jail. Thatcher imposed sanctions on SA, as she said "sanctions work" and they did and still do.
Do not, in this history, under estimate the activities of the Tory Party. It is the party of anti slavery. Wm. Wilberforce was a Tory.
The combined political might of the USA, UK and others, was what drove SA towards becoming a democracy. It was also in some great measure made possible by leading Boers themselves, who had come to believe that apartheid was not the answer and that a democracy would ensure a better future for SA.
One of the first acts performed by Nelson Mandela when he was president, was the creation of "Reconciliation". The people of SA have reconciled their history. Raceism no longer exists in SA - it is past history, dead and forgotten.
Move forward SA - one nation.
For whatever the reason, there is no doubt that SA is set on course to a far better future than was formerly the case. This in spite of the difficulties faced by the people, who are noted as brave, stoic and courageous.
I cannot imagine waiting all day in the hot sun to cast my vote in an election. But this is exactly what South Africans did at their first ever free elections. People here in UK were glued to their TV screens on South Africa's first Election Day.
Good luck to them all.

Mandela was a terrorist as far as the Apartheid government was concerned. Mandela himself admits to burying a Makarov pistol at a farm near Joburg. The weapon was given to Mandela by an Ethiopian army officer when he was undergoing military training in Addis Ababa.
So no matter how unfair and cruel the regime that Mandela opposed was, he was still prepared to use insurgency and terrorism to suit his political ends. The same clarion call is coming out of Islamist Jihadi websites who claim similar opression.
Mandela was no Ghandi and the likes of Adams and McGinnis would aspire for his sort of rehabilitated reputation, but they were all terrorists as were Golda Meir and David Ben Gurion.
History and hindsight analysis often obscure the nuances and difficulties of reacting to situations as you find them. In ten, twenty or thirty years time will Dhiren Barot be rehabilitated as an Islamist visionary?

Rev. Nelson Mandela was put in prison because he was against the ruling regime of South Africa. He believed that the minority predomently Dutch should not be in power in his country. Nelson Mandela was not a terrorist in any sense of the word and did not believe in violence he believed in change through peaceful means.

Further to Richmond Girls answer, it's also because he was involved in terrorist offences against the state. That makes his imprisonment completely legitimate, whatever the position of that state in international politics.
Remember, the only difference between a freedom fighter and a terrorist is where you're standing when the bomb goes off.
Please note, I have no doubt that Mr Mandela was on the side of the freedom fighter, but I also see very clearly why the Apartheid government in South Africa considered him a terrorist.
However, he has gone completely full circle and is now one of the most respected elder statesmen of the world.

He was a Terrorist - part of the - then - Outlawed ANC... He was part of a gang that was trying to destabilise South Africa,- on the pretence of equal rights for the Blacks, - along with his ex-wife Winnie - they got up to all sorts of weird things.. She got 5 years for fraud..she was also known to be a sexual deviant...who prayed on young boys - she took the rap for most of what Nelson & her got up to.. Some people think Mandela is a Saint & Hero - but at the end of the day - he was a Criminal.
The Appartied regime is South Africa - was wrong is - but there is Law's to obey...and Nelson & Co... went about their campaign the unlawful way.. Thats why he was Jailed...

Because he fought against Apartheid in South Africa when it was national policy, namely the separation of the races by law. For example, it was illegal for a white man to have an affair with a black woman, and the penalty was death.
If you want a great picture of how it was in South Africa during Apartheid, read Alan Paton's two books, CRY, THE BELOVED COUNTRY and TOO LATE THE PHALAROPE. I guarantee you will be unable to put either book down. Paton was a fierce opponent of racial separation, and these two books depict what it was like.
