It may be legal to do so, however you should keep in mind that while you are riding in such a way you have removed half of the space you need in case of an emergency. Like when Grammy Grump that decides she wants to merge into the lane you are in, or Left turn Louie decides to.

You mean on another bike? Yes, it's legal to ride side-by-side, if both riders agree to do it. The CA vehicle code does not specifically prohibit two vehicles being side by side in the same lane.

It's hard to dig up, but the basic answer is YES. The forums I link to in the source actually links directly to a California answers site, which is also available on the source. I've also seen it all the time I go to Cali.

go to DMV and get a motorcycle hand book and read on, it will inform you of do's and dont's its not a good idea to ride side by side unless you are in a controled area

Yes. That doesn't make it a good idea though. You have too little leeway for maneuvering around road junk. Your DMV handbook therefore recommends a "staggered" formation.
