WoW. No, they shouldn't be thrown open, but the people shouldn't be shoved out either.
b.bennett.topanswer-It was Saddam who got hung, not Osama.
Anyway, most people only know what t.v. tells them about immigration, and have never, and don't have the need to immigrate anywhere else. Should the Native Americans have 'closed the borders' when the pilgrims came? Or should they have kept land that rightfully belonged to them? Or should Mexico have its territory, so Mexicans could live in California legally. Should Native Americans applaud the fact that their land has now been reduced to reservations? Mexico would have a much better economy and Mexicans in general wouldn't have the need to immigrate anywhere if their land was still theirs. You forget that this country was built on Immigration and the stealing of peoples land. The Native Americans and The Mexicans owned this land first. They gave Santa Ana pennies compared to what this land was truly worth. The real spit in the face is the fact that even though this land once belonged to Mexicans, people are soooo hasty to give an inch. I hope we think a little about our history as Americans before we judge Mexicans.
So no, they cant be thrown open, but they also can't be completely closed.

Please read my whole answer before judging.
I think that for a reasonably short period of time, ALL immigration should grind to a halt. Not just for those who cross illegally but legal immigration as well. Just suspend things where they are but don't allow more.
We need to REALLY look at our immigration policies and revamp based on what is happening in our country. True, except for NA's our forefathers all immigrated...some voluntarily, some not.
I lived in Glendale California for 18 yrs. After I moved there, I learned that it was a community that had covenants about selling or renting to AA's. In other words, they had to be out of the city by sundown. I thought this was appalling.
By the time we left, there were people from many ethnicities and races there. East Indian, Fllipino, Korean, AA's, Mexicans, South and Central Americans etc. Plus a very large influx of Armenians when the Soviet Union allowed them to leave Georgia.
Two of my children were had been or were in high school when we moved. I had appreciated the fact that they were able to have friends from different cultures as they grew up. They learned to appreciate those kinds of differences.
What had happened though, was that the movement of people in had been rapid and there hadn't been any time for any melding together as a community. So, we started seeing gangs of the different ethnicities and races fighting on campuses, in neighborhoods, crime rates went up. Skin heads joined the fray. Pretty soon we had many different and separate "cultures" living in a confined area and not appreciating or respecting each other. Shootings and stabbings at schools, malls etc became more frequent. Schools closed the campuses, fences were built around them, Malls had to increase security to deal with violent and inappropriate behavior. Simple courtesies were harder to find, drivers exhibited more road and parking spot rage. Neighborhoods stopped being places children could play outside in without adult supervision at all times.
And it's not to say that immigrants at fault for the difficulties. It's what happens when immigration outpaces peoples abilities to get attached and develop as a community of diversity. It also encourages separation by language and culture. People tend to isolate in their own community rather than reaching out to be a "part of."
I would venture to guess that what happened in Glendale, has happened in many other cities who have had unchecked immigration. I don't think it was unique to the South West.
So, until we are able to allow immigration in a manageable way that does allow for jobs, schooling, integration into community and respect for each others culture, we should stop what we are doing and appoint some intelligent, thoughtful and creative people to develop a system that works better for everyone, and keeps immigration legal, and manageable.

You mean wider open than it is now?
I don't think it's a good idea, no. We should be able to know who is in the country. Especially in the age of terrorism.
And if cheap labor is soo important, how come Mexico isn't the world's leading economy?
