You have to diagnose this when the truck does not start as you seem to have an intermittent here. When it doesn't start you have to determine if you have strong and consistent spark output to all cylinders. If you have no spark at all, you have a primary ignition problem which will be connections to the coil or to the distributor, a coil problem, an ignition module fault, or a pick up coil problem. When the motor won't start, you will have to check for proper ground and power supply to the coil and down to the distributor. If that is okay, you will have to check for voltage pulses when the motor is cranked at the white wire to the coil. It should pulse when cranked with a test light attached. If the light is on steady with no pulses, you have an ignition module or pick-up coil problem or both. The injectors are driven by the PCM through another circuit in the ignition module which also pulses voltage that account for RPM. The most common causes here are the module or the pick-up coil. Another big one is the same except it is the connections to each other. Have a good look at the connectors inside the distributor. If there is a green mold on all the module and pick-up coil connections, that is usually what is wrong and you will have to replace both. Good luck.
