The Donnas! They've literally been doing this half their lives (they got together in middle school and had their first album out when they were 16) and they're still kicking it in their mid-20s.

If you're adventurous, go through amazon or ebay and pick up something (either CD or vinyl) by The Brood. They were an all-girl garage band from Portland, Maine, from the early '80s through mid-'90s. They kicked some serious as s. They released several albums and singles. They were loud, they were trashy and they had a ton of energy (not to mention Chris Horne's punkish voice and raunchy guitar and Asch Gregory's mad, swirling organ sound). Too bad you never got to see them.

The garage sound lent itself to other excellent groups in the '80s and '90s, groups, too: The Pandoras, The Friggs, The Muffs and The Bangles, to name four.

There's always Blondie. Debbie Harry at 62 could put a lot of kids to shame. She was there at the ground floor of punk and has forgotten more than most kids will ever know.

One of Debbie's big '60s role models just released her first recording in almost 40 years. Mary Weiss, the former singer for the baddest of the '60s girl groups, The Shangri-Las, recorded "Dangerous Game," backed by a great young Memphis band called The Reigning Sound. (It's on Norton, out of Brooklyn, one of the finest and coolest record labels in the universe.) Mary still has it.

From the late '70s/early '80s, can't forget The Go-Go's or Bow Wow Wow or The Slits.

And, of course, there's always Joan Jett. She's timeless. Nuff said ...

I saw a video today with a female lead singer- it was Song With A Mission by The Sounds, and I thought it was pretty good, but I don't know the band well. Then there's Evanescence, and Feist, and Architecture in Helsinki.
