The series is calculated thus, starting at 40; +5, -8, +5, -9, +5, -10 ... etc.

So the next number is 16 (=27-11) and subsequent numbers would be 21 (+5), 9 (-12), 14 (+5), 1 (-13), 6 (+5), -8 (-14), -3 (+5), -18 (-15) and so on.

Ignore the over-complex answers given elsewhere - it's just simple addition and subtraction !!!

.

ADDENDUM : Having looked at it again, the answer can be 16 *OR* 18 !!!

Taking alternating sequences you have;

Sequence 1 : 40 (-7=) 33 (-6=) 27 (-5=) 22 ...
Sequence 2 : 45 (-7=) 38 (-6=) 32 (-5=) 27 ...

and so the next number in your complete sequence would be 22-4 = 18

So there you have it, the answer is 16 or 18 depending on whether you treat it as a single sequence or two interwoven sequences.

I think ptolemy862000 has the right idea. The sequence is : 8, 12, 18, 27, ... Take the first differences : 4, 6, 9, ... Now take the second differences : 2, 3, ... Assuming the next second difference is 4, then the next first difference will be 13, which means the next number in the sequence will be 40.

In order to find this you have to find the pattern behind the numbers. So beginning from 40 you go to 45 (+5). Then from 45 you go to 33 (-12). Next you go to 38 (+5). After that 27 (-11). Next 32 (+5). Then 22 (-10). Finally 27 (+5). So you'll have to remove 9 (the number you remove decreases by one in each repetition). So the correct number is 18.

18. the first, third, fifth, and seventh numbers decrease by 7, 6, 5 and 4 from each other while the numbers in between just add 5 to the number before. take out the extra numbers you get 40 (-7) 33 (-6) 27 (-5) 22 (-4) and next would be 18

the series should be taken by pairs
40,45
33,38
27,32
22,27

the common in these pairs, their difference is 5. On the other hand taking the numbers 45 38 32 27 it could be seen that there is a pattern 45-38=7.38-32=6,32-27=5. Therefore the next pair (x,y) should have a difference of 5 and the difference of y and 27 sould be 4
27-y=4
y=23
solve for x
x-23=5
x=28

40,45,33,38,27,32,22,27,28,23

difference between 40 and 45 is 5
33 & 38 is 5 so on
difference betwwen 40 and 33 is 7
33 & 27 is 6
27 and 22 is 5
now u should take -4 from 22 then it is 18
according to first line it is 18,23(18+5)
so then next sequence is 18,23
