i m currently using xp..and i don't want to share my net with the laned pc.plz guide me....

A router connecting the comoputers in the easiest, but a crossover cable will do the same thing. If later you wish to share a broadband connection you will need a router anyways.

Awkward question.
Do you mean you want to access the "laned pc" but you don't want them to get on yours??
You need an ethernet hub and the cables, then set up the network on both computers, then you need to get on the other machine and drag the drive c: icon from My Computer to Shared Documents. The only place the other computer will be able to look is your shared documents folder and if you don't put anything in it, there is nothing to share.

If not, ask the administrator, they should know.
