My husband is a 'computer pro' and he works eight or more hours every day at his job. He doesn't like answering questions all the time when he's not working ... but he does 'share his knowledge' all the time ... including playing WoW with a ten year old who wants to be a 'game designer' someday ... so I don't really know what you are talking about ... perhaps if you were 'less pushy' when you want help, and 'ask politely' you'll get more of the 'information' you want and need. I'm not saying that you are pushy and you need to be more polite, really ... just pointing out that THAT may be your 'problem' and you don't know it. Other than that, try taking computer classes ... that's what my husband did, and he went straight into teaching and taught for 5 years before he became a 'desk sitter' at a 'regular job.' GOOD LUCK.

No self respecting computer scientist or IT Professional likes to be spoon fed. Especially considering the resources available on the Internet today. Many of the questions asked on Yahoo answer are homework. How does it benefit anyone to help someone cheat. The cheater develops a lazy work ethic and he is going to have great difficulty in performing effectively on the job. A person who cheats doesn't learn and as such when he is presented with a problem where he can't look up the answer he can't solve it. He has no problem solving skills what so ever.

Two types of individuals:
1. People in it for the money
2. People not in it for the money

If they are in it for the money, provide the money and you will get all your answers.

If they are not in it for the money, they are doing something thats paying their bills and therefore have less time to dedicate to the questions. Either way a computer question can be as simple or as complex as either parties involves makes it. (Computer pro could have too much knowledge regarding issue and computer user may not have enough and vice versa). Key thing is this: The internet has an answer to possibly every computer question. If you haven't found it yet, you're probably not looking in the right places (Which could also not be your fault, the internet is rather huge). Hopefully that helps.

Some of us are here.

I think you'll see that a vast majority of the computer related questions here are being answered by computer professionals.

When it comes to the types of questions that involve very in-depth knowledge related to servers, or programming especially, there is very little incentive to answer questions here for free when it would cost a client $250/hour or more to have that professional on site.

I have no qualm answering questions from people at home or work trying to get simple solutions for Workstations or wireless networks. I won't give it away for server solutions though. That's not in my best interest.

I too agree dude. But only up to certain level.

Here lot of people are posting questions, lot of people are giving answers. We cant answer certain questions as we don't know their environment. If we answer with out knowing their environment, they will be in trouble sometime.

Another main thing which I see among the people is they just want to resolve an issue, but don't want to know the real cause, work around etc. A good percentage of people is using yahoo answers as a shortcut for getting an issue resolved.

In general, If you are technically good, I am happy to share what all knowledge I have. But those who are technically not sound, If i suggest an answer, they will blindly do it and again come up with more problems. So I will not suggest an answer for such issues.

Its just my view.

Cheers!

I have a day job -- nothing important, just testing stupid, geeky, space vehicle stuff. When I finish that, I'm an "Adjunct". I share my knowledge by teaching an evening class in CS or ECE at the local university. Yeah, I get paid, but it's less than half of what I get for my day job. I just do it because I like helping "kids" out.

I have three computers in my basement waiting to be repaired; I spent an hour and a half on the phone with my sister to fix her computer problem today; and I'm "Level 5" on "Answers". ... Some days, even my own kid wants help fixing her computer or doing her math. What's with that??!! =:-)

I think, sometimes, that if I spend any more time sharing my knowledge, I won't have time for a life of my own ...... wait! ... I'm thinking about it now! ................ It's ... it's .... it's .... it's ... too late! ............ :screams of terror: ............. changing to ................ :maniacal laughter: ........... :)

i asked that too

1) they think they are something special
2) They are busy
3) They have no time for anyone else ( in their minds)
4) They want to keep their high paying jobs

In the case of computer networking get older networking books at garage sales or thrift shops.
They will often tell you the things you want to know

- these are older technologies that you are most likely using now. Networking types are involved with newer higher end stuff now and cannot be bothered to explain or help you with your actual problems and concerns..

p.s you were not imagining that computer professional were reluctant to share info. Some but not all.

Two places of info:

I love to answer as many questions as I can on Yahoo! Answers. It's actually pretty addictive. Sometimes I look at people's questions and say to myself, "Man there is no way I can answer that without being at their machine."

There are a lot of things that can tip an answer one way or another. Most people don't provide enough information. So those questions get skipped by a lot of computer pros.

A lot of questions are very complex and it is hard to know where to start with the answer. You don't want to be too geeky, but who knows where each person's level is...you know? Makes it hard to answer sometimes.

I work in IT, and I deal with this kind of stuff all day. Most of the time, when I skip over questions, its either because the question is easily answered in 5 seconds using google, or its just something I am not interested in. Plus, typically professionals get paid.

Actually here on Yahoo answers, most share their knowledge quite freely. You can't get them to stop talking :)

But I agree, for time-consuming problems people need to test things out themselves- not expect someone else to do the work for them. Many solutions are arrived at by process of elimination and long hours...
