If you want to prosecute or even take the matter to Small Claims Court, or confront the individuals that stole the money from you, you will have no choice but to reveal your source or it will not have a valid case.
Only other alternatives are:
1) If you had homeowners or renters insurance and what you deductable is. Even so, at minimum, you would need to have filed a police report when it happened. If you didn't you can try now, but your story will be much less credible
2) Eat the loss and get more locks or security options where you currently reside, move or don't keep any valuables in your house.

I would get a full account from the witness and get ALL the facts straight, time, what they were wearing, where they entered through, etc. Confront the people and recount what you know as fact. Add "a little white liea" that you even have them on video. Tell them to return money in 3 days or you will go to police with evidence along with witness. If they deny, make sure you have enough facts to make police report. If they comply, get your money back and NEVER be around them again. Also inform all who may socialize with them what kind of people they are. The friends relationship went out the door the minute they did this very low act. My Grandmother once told me, "better to beg in the streets and ask, than to steal".
PS if you think confronting them may escalate and turn dangerous, avoid confronting them. Get your facts and go to police asap. Hope things work out for you in your favor.

If the people who told you are close friends, you can forget the 300, or you can tell them that you have to tell because money is tight, or go to the police who probably will upset your friends and get nothing done.

Go to the police station and file a report. You will not be able to keep it a secret, you will have to reveal the name.

Your other option would be to confront the individual, and tell him/her that you will be going to the police if they don't return the money. However, if you do, don't accept promises -- they already proved themselves to be dishonest.
Also, change your locks.
