Many people/cultures over the world, over the last few thousand years, have stated the world will end,as we know it, in that time frame. Was on History channel (July 5th). It's even stated in the Bible.

The mayan calander ends in 2012. That could either mean that could either mean they thing the world is going to end because of allignment issues with the earth, sun, moon, planets and what not, or they got bored and stopped making the calender and it just happens to be in 2012...you decide

I don't think the world will end. Instead, we could be thrown into a cataclysm of disasters. The north and south pole will shift polarities, causing insanely huge electrical storms trowing the entire earth off balance. It sounds farfetch'd. Probably is. Then again Nostradamus did predict a famine so great, that noone on earth could escape it, and we would resort to canabilism. That, combined with what he calls the third and Final "Anti-christ"
could be in the works. maybe off a few years. No, the world will not explode, but we may be in trouble. atleast until his prediction of the planet's life finally coming to an end in the year 3797.

Now where is that in the bible??? People have estimated the end of the world since the idea of it was presented (for the past several thousand years). None of the predictions have been right to date, but one of the many might just finally be right somehow.

The Mayan calender ends on 21st Dec 2012 - at that time the source of evil - the dark hole in the milky way will be lit by our sun for the first time and all evil will be known. Maybe hell is to pay - big time.
At sunrise on December 21, 2012 for the first time the Sun rises to conjunct the intersection of the Milky Way and the plane of the ecliptic.

The Bible says nothing of the kind; it says that no one knows, not even Jesus. Only God the father knows.
I agree with the other answer - the mayans just stopped at that point with their calendar.
So many dates have come and gone in the 1900s that were predicted to be the doom date.
Nobody knows.

That is the date the Earth will be aligned with the center of our Milky Way Galaxy. Its amazing that the Mayans had so much insight into an event like this.
