With lack of post war planning I'm not sure if anyone can do any better job than it is now. I do think there was little window just after Saddam's fall, but we blew it.

I think it's like asking 'what can we do?' after we run out of gas in middle of desert. And next gas station is 100 miles away.

I really believe people when they say we have no good options anymore.

Their are no easy solutions at this time, but if it was up to me I would make some drastic steps.

First break up Iraq into a federation of three semi autonomous territories, and have Baghdad as an independent Federal district that is directly administered by the national government.

Second phase all control of the three areas to their respective groups in the next few months. Leaving American troops only in Baghdad and separate military bases outside populated areas.

phase out control of Baghdad when the military and police force can control it.

Leave about 30,000 American troops on bases outside populated areas in the same way their are American bases in Germany and South Korea.

The point of leaving those troops there, but out of harms way is to act as a deterrent to any civil war breaking out and to exert pressure on other nations in the region.

That is my solution.

I don't think the current bout of sectarian, Sunni versus Shia violence will stop until Iraq is divided into separate Sunni and Shia areas.
