there are many different reasons, why this happens but it comes down to fear, some people say shock, panic, being taken by surprise, but the response in your head is usually fear

I know for me it's when I'm feeling extremely sad, depressed, or helpless. I guess it would depend on the person and the different situations but those are the three main emotions for when I experience that feeling.

If I recall correctly, it's usually the experience of being *rejected* or the feeling of rejection, though for some people intense *fear* of any sort will do that too.

The interesting part of it is that some researchers have done MRI and CT scans of people's brains while they were feeling this, and compared them to brain scans from people with medical *chronic* stomach pain.

And at the brain's level, there's no difference, apparently it hits the same exact centers of the brain. You can look it up at the following site, using the keywords "Rejection", "stomach pain and reactions", and "brain activity scans".
