something pleasant to you that isn't too distracting

yes and no.
when u study it's advised that u study under the same conditions as those provided in the exam room.if the test is going to be taken in a room with a loudly ticking clock then study in silence with only a clock.it's about association.u'll do better this way.that is to say,if u study in noise,u'll most likely need some level of noise in the exam room to remember more
as for music,it helps to an extent.the type may not really matter.it again depends on association. if u listen to rap music and study, u'll prob find urself remembering the rap song and hopefully the work as well
but there's a concept in psychology known as "figure and ground/background" which says that we can only focus on one thing at a time whether it be the figure or the background so if u're listening to music and studying one may suffer,u'll either be paying more attention to the music or the studies.
but to each its own, some ppl claim that music helps them srudy better

I've heard that too. The study I read did deal with classical music though. I think as long as it isn't too loud or otherwise distracting, any kind of music is ok.

Yes, studies have shown this is true. Classical music is best, it stimulates the brain and also has shown to increase the IQs of infants

I know that I wouldn't be able to concentrate listening to headbanging music though

Whatever music you listen to helps you remember. When you are old and hear music from your youth, you will flash back to the times and places you were, and things you were doing while you first heard that music. It anchors stuff in your mind. If only they allow you to play that music while you are taking the exams, then you've got it made!

No. Studying means to focus all of your efforts on one thing at a time.

Study tips: Study where the test is going to be a few hours before the test takes place(if possible)

Study before you go to sleep

Study with other students in same class

Highlight important stuff in text

Take notes in class

In my education classes we learned that certain things can increase engagement (thus you learn more) and it can a form of what is called "hot cognition" ( a funny name) - what it means is when you connect emotionally you really learn and remember something better - and music can do that.
It doesn't necessarily have to be classical music.
The problem is how do you do that in a classroom - you really can't. There is too much variety in music taste and choices.

It certainly can it helps if you use the lyrics in the song your listening to and convert what you are studying into the song along with some original lyrics. sounds crazy but works for me

I would suggest having the least possible number of distractions while you study is most beneficial. ie: no music
