ROWLING.

"Elevating" means lifting up or improving morals. You can't do that if your books have no merit.

"Doubt" is a question. "Drought" is when there is no rain.

We don't know if she is a great author, yet. Great (Classic, at least) authors are those whose works have been popular with more than one generation. Beatrix Potter and Beverly Cleary spring to mind, for children. If Harry Potter is selling thousands of copies when the current fans' children start to read chapter books 20 or 30 years from now, she will be a classic author. Only time will tell.

She is certainly a popular author and a wonderful person. A couple of years a go a charity asked her to donate a signed copy of one of her books so they could auction it off. "Pshaw!", she said, and dashed off two small paperbacks, one about Quidditch, one about dragons. She ceded the author's share of all sales of both books to the charity.

My brother teaches 6th grade. Parents have come to him with tears in their eyes to say they saw their child reading a book all by themselves, without being asked, for the first time in their lives, thanks to Ms. Rowling. Literary merit pales beside that feat.

When I was teaching English as a second language, some of my students tried too hard. If it isn't your first language, don't use a fancy phrase when a simple one will do. Winston Churchill rallied an entire nation with words of one and two syllables. There is no shame in writing simple, clear English but quite a bit of embarassment in writing complex, muddled English.

Ok, no doubt she is a great author? but you do not see her as a great author?
This isn't a question to this and the details just contradict each other.

I must admit to being a bit confused with your question. Yes, she has undoubtedly made a bundle on her books--I believe she is the wealthiest author ever, but I could be wrong on that.

You state her books are elevating youth, but the next sentence states they have no merit and give a sense of non-reality to her works. Those two sentences seem somewhat contradictory to me. Are you saying her books are good because kids are reading them? Or are you saying they're crap?

I am confused, and if you could please clarify a little, I will try to come back and give you a decent answer.

Thanks.

Ted Pack *hugs* your answer was awesome.
In addition to all the wonderful things everyone else has said about Harry Potter. J.K. Rowling has given me and my 8 year old something that we can really enjoy together and discuss. We read the books together go to the book and movie releases together and then debate the book or movie for hours. I'm sure other parents out there will agree its not always easy to find things you can relate with your kids over.

ok, obviously a personal opinion, as are all artistic critics. Only thing i would say is that her books have got hundereds of thousands of people (maybe millions) reading and enjoying books that otherwise would have watched tv or played video games. I think that is a good thing.

You could of course argue that so has Dan Brown and that is obviosuly a bad thing.

Is she dickens or Dostoevsky - possibly not, but she's getting kids reading and that's great

Dude, you need to cut back on the weed. The only way her books could elevate our youth is if they stood on them. They are excellent books - well written and enjoyed by millions. And, they're just books.

Let me begin (and end) my answer with a question: Why does everybody think JK Rowling's name is JK Rollins?

i agree with you i for one do not understand why people dig her work when i seriously have read more interesting and enlightening books that should have made it into people's minds, well harry potter is a simple book, and nothing more, it is for the imagination of the weak
i mean it has its good and bad points ,but the success that the book is gaining is a mystery to me, i dont even find it engaging to read or did not even inspire me in anyway and did not even entertain me.

Never confuse talent with popularity. The two very rarely come together.

Make your mind up.
I doubt if many will disagree with you as I doubt if many will understand what you're saying
