Yes.... either genetically predisposed to not be able to handle stress well, or chemical imbalance in the brain, or poor or no example of how to deal with stress in a healthy manner.

I have only cut once, and I was severely depressed at the time. I had a friend in middle school who cut... I later found out that she was being sexually abused at the time.

So, there may be outside reasons that cause the stress, but people who know how to handle stress healthfully & do not let their emotions take control of them do not cut.

I used to be a cutter and yes, people who cut are emotionally unstable. I had a lot of issues that I wasn't dealing with. Anyone that harms themselves intentionally needs help.

yes, that's why they cut. If they were stable they wouldn't be cutting. The cutting is their way of stabilizing their emotions. They get a rush of gratification or ease and suddenly all their anxiety, anger, sadness, or whatever else they're feeling disappears (or really just hides, because the cutting only masks the problem).

People have an instinct for self preservation. It takes something pretty strong to overcome that instinct.
Even the people who cut for attention are emotionally needy.

I don't think that it is all one way or the other. Some of them really do have emotion problems and probably need some sort of help.

But on the other hand, I know people who cut for attention and pretend to have emotional problems.

yes, generally those who cut are in a lot of internal pain and turmoil. Cutting can be an addiction as well. i would think this type of behavior would qualify as "unstable"

I would say yes.

A cutter does not know how 2express out their feelings. When their bottled-up emotions keep on 'expand' within them, till they have to let it out, hence their avenue is to cut themself. So that when they see their own blood oozing out, it's as if their pain is flowing out too.

Though this would just be a temporary release. As the pain wells up in them again, they have to cut themselves again.
