i believe that it is from a combination of being conceited and low self esteem, as in having the want to be better then others as opposed to actually being better...

They feel insecure inside themselves. So inside they really feel less then others and act superior to hide the insecurity that they feel.

I think they truly have low self esteem and just try to overcompensate for that

because they were raised to believe that they are or take it upon themselves to think they are when the only person they are fooling is themselves. good luck.
