Why would my new laptop I bought today from Walmart say that it has 80 gigs of memory right on the sticker on the keyboard interface, when it's opened up. . .. and yet it shows two hard drives w/ 33.3 gigs each (69.9) total? ( When I look in the computer properties) Is there a mistake? I also read that it had 1020 or so megs of ram and yet it shows it has 768 megs of ram in the properties - not so sure about the exact numbers on that one. The model is an Acer Aspire 5050-3371
any suggestions? The great thing is - their computer in the electronics section ( which helped consumers shop and compare) was off and no one knew how to turn it back on - and I went on Walmart's website when I got home, the model wasn't appearing !!! But I did see there apparently is one with more ram and memory that comes with a whole bunch of accessories as a package, that will be in stock this weekend, that costs $50 less than my purchase. please answer the first part essentially.

With the hard drive, the hard drive is probably on it's own partition, which is being used, and the formatting, and the fact that they use 1 billion bytes per GB, instead of what it really is, 1.074 billion bytes per GB.
Also, you probably have integerated graphics, which takes memory from the system. If it took 256MB, which it most likely does, it would show as if it only had 768MB system RAM.
And AUS got it 16 seconds before me.

I cannot believe I am actuall defending Wally World OR Acer (although they do make some halfway decent monitors).
This is NOT a major issue. ALL companies do this. There is a difference between what a company calls a gig. Is it 1000 M, is it 1024 M, is it 1024x1024? There is no government regulation. There is also a hidden partition where restore ifo and diagnostic info is kept.
As far as the RAMM, you have integrated video, that subtracts from your RAMM.
You did not get ripped off. That being said, there are probably alot better computers for around the same price. A computers quality is NOT just measured by the spped of the processor and the size of the HD.

Usually the PC does not have 80 gigs of Memory.. And as far as the Hard Drives, that is Computer Size, example. I have a 80 gig Hard Drive, but it shows on the Properties as 78.6 gigs, this is the way it is in the computer world... As far as the Memory showing 768 MB's. Right Click the Taskbar, choose Task Manager, Performance and on the Right Hand side Midways Down you will see, Total, Available, and System Cache, This gives you the True Memory Count. Good Luck

Walmart will furnish you that for the time of your receipt once you purchase the pc and the guaranty. you would be calling Acer, no longer Walmart. do no longer hear to the different comments you have, Acer is a superb type. I even have had mine for some years and this is super. Plus it somewhat is often good to get a guaranty no rely what pc you get.

about the 69.9 that's normal, they call it 80.
but call them to check, may be there is a hidden partition for system recovery, you know, a recovery copy of windows and stuff.
about the 768, it's actually an 1024, but the trick is your video memory is 256 "shared" that is deducted from your system memory.
so 1024(system)-256(video)=768(what left to the windows)
don't worry, nothing is a lie.

I would have to say Acer. Walmart employees aren't trained for anything, really. The manufacturer places stickers like the one you described on the products.
