I'm making a costume from the musical CATS, and this involves some intricate crosshatching on the body of the costume. I'm using gray and black FabricMate fabric markers on a light gray sweatshirt/sweatpants. Will this fade/wash off over time? I really want the job to be permanent, as it takes forever to do and I want it to stay once I get it perfect... (This costume won't be undergoing any heavy wear in a stage production, it's just for Halloween, cosplay, etc.)

They're meant to stay, but they will fade over time. Wash them inside out to minimize scuffing, and use the gentle cycle. Use Woolite or other gentle soap, not the ones that advertise that they will remove all markings from your clothes.

Read the directions. Some fabric markers need to be heat-set, usually by ironing, to make them permanent.

The "wash inside out" is good advice. I also let hand-decorated items drip dry and then just air-fluff in the dryer (without heat) if necessary.

A lot depends on what fabric you are using. You want more than 50% cotton. Pure cotton is best. You won't have a chance on polyester or nylon.

Store it in a dark cool place when you aren't using it.

They shouldn't do. Test them on a piece of material and try washing it out a few times.
