No. Mental illness is a decease that can by diagnosed.
When you say someone is "psycho" it generally means that you think they are out of their mind. I work with an awful lot of psychos but none of them are mentally ill. They're just nuts!

If you mean psycho as in being a sociopath, than that is a form of mental illness.

The term "psycho" is shortened for "psychotic". There are many levels of being labeled as such, but it is def. a form of mental illness. Depression is another form, albeit not as handicapping as psychotic, but in general having a "mental illness" is a very broad term.

There are plenty of mental illnesses that have nothing to do with psychosis

Therefore

While being psychotic means being mentally ill, being mentally ill does not necessarily mean psychotic

No completely different. People who are mentally ill just have mental problems like severe anxiety or depression. A phycopath has lack of empathy or conscience, and poor impulse control or manipulative behaviors.(some r killers) That is a mental illness though.

Psycho is short for psychopathic, which we now call sociopathic, it is a mental illness, so yes, it does apply, mentally ill is broader, psycho is more specific.

I think being a psycho is controllable, while mentally ill isn't. I'm no psycologist nor phychiatrist expert.
