The U.S. already had their 16,000 military advisors, thanks to JFK's administration, in Vietnam as early as 1962. Kennedy annouced the training mission would be completed by 1965. A coup in November, 1963, removed the dictatorial President of "South" Vietnam - Ngo Dinh Diem, and the political situation disintegrated.

In 1965, Kennedy's "training mission" was not over. The Johnson administration approved of the U.S. bombing of North Vietnam, and in July it agreed to send 175,000 U.S. combat forces to "South" Vietnam. The U.S. was fighting an undeclared war with the people of Vietnam.

Demonstrations in New York in 1965 attracted 25,000 marchers.

To answer your question - it only took the American people a few months later after the events in 1965 to "hit the streets" and protest the unjust war in Vietnam.
