I need a computer that is great for moderate offline and online gaming, playing video clips(e.g. youtube), downloading movies, music, for DSL, and some daily homework tasks.
I would like to build my own computer if possible.

Whatever the components are, I'm sure it will need lots of memory.

Anybody have any suggestions for the components that will maximize my needs?

Memory is only part of the equation... you need to have a fast hard drive... games are too big these days to reside in memory so a good 10,000 RPM hard drive will really speed things up... also a good video card with lots of memory will do you better that tons of memory.

Dell would be a ripoff parts and service wise. If you have experience in building computers then go for it as it helps maximizing money verses parts. But if you want things like service and warranty then going with a established company is the better way to go.

A good company to consider is Carbonfrost Systems. I can speak from experience when I say they have the best warranty and service. They will literally build it to whatever you want while keeping the price low. They have computers in all price ranges so you should be able to find one.
